What causes it
Most car smells come from something that soaked into fabric or foam and is now breaking down. The stain on top is only part of it. Liquid wicks down into the seat foam or carpet underlay, bacteria feed on it, and heat in a closed car speeds the whole process up.
The jobs we see most often:
- Milk, formula and food from kids' car seats
- Coffee, soft drink and juice in carpets and cup holders
- Vomit, from kids, pets or a big night out
- Cigarette and vape smoke in the headlining and seats
- Wet-dog smell and pet accidents
- Sweat and sunscreen on seat bolsters
- Damp carpet smell after a leak (if the carpet is soaked, see our flood and water-damaged car cleaning page)
How we fix it on-site
Effective stain removal in a car means getting the residue out of the fibres and foam, not just cleaning the surface. We pre-treat, agitate, then rinse and extract with a hot-water extractor so the dirty liquid comes out of the seat instead of being pushed deeper. After that, we treat the remaining odour in the cabin.
The usual steps:
- Find the source. We check under seats, in seat rails, under floor mats and in the boot, because the smell is often coming from somewhere you can't see.
- Pre-treat. A cleaner matched to the stain type (protein, tannin, grease or dye) goes on and is left to work.
- Agitate and extract. Brushes loosen the stain, then hot-water extraction pulls it out of the carpet or upholstery.
- Hard surfaces. Plastics, vents, seatbelts and the headlining get cleaned, because smoke and smells sit on these too.
- Odour treatment. Once the source is gone, we treat the cabin air and soft surfaces for the lingering smell.
- Drying. We leave windows cracked or use airflow so fabric dries properly. Damp foam is what brings smells back.
For a car that's stale all over rather than one bad spot, a full interior car detailing service with odour treatment is usually the better booking.
We arrive self-sufficient where access allows; we'll confirm water and power needs when you book.
What it costs (from)
Stain and odour removal is from $XX. Price depends on vehicle size, how many areas are affected and what caused it. One coffee stain on a hatch is a short job. A 7-seater with milk in the third row and smoke through the headlining takes much longer.
| Situation | Typical scope |
|---|---|
| One or two spot stains | Targeted extraction on the affected seats or carpet |
| Whole-cabin smell (food, pets, sweat) | Extraction plus odour treatment across all soft surfaces |
| Smoke | Headlining, seats, carpet, vents and hard surfaces all need work |
| Vomit | Priority extraction of seat foam, belts and carpet, then odour treatment |
Heavy soiling is a condition surcharge on our standard packages, so let us know what we're dealing with when you book. Our pricing page explains the size tiers.
How long it takes
A spot stain job is usually one to two hours. Full-cabin odour work, especially smoke, can take three hours or more plus drying time. Fabric needs to dry properly before the car is shut up again, so plan not to drive with the windows closed for the rest of that day if possible.

FAQs
Can you remove cigarette smoke smell from a car?
Usually, yes, but it's one of the harder jobs. Smoke sits in the headlining, seat foam, vents and every hard surface. We clean all of those and treat the cabin. A car that's been smoked in daily for years may improve a lot without becoming completely smell-free, and we'll tell you that upfront.
Will the stain come back after it dries?
Some stains "wick" back up as they dry because the residue is deep in the foam. Hot-water extraction removes most of that residue, which is why we use it rather than surface spray-and-wipe. If a mark reappears within a few days, call us.
Do you do vomit car cleaning?
Yes. Car sickness on a long drive or a school run happens to everyone, and the sooner we get to it the better, because stomach acid and proteins set into fabric and the smell gets worse in the heat. Book online and add a note.
Can every car carpet stain be removed?
Most can, but not all. Dye stains, bleach marks and stains that have been "set" with heat or the wrong cleaner can leave a permanent shadow. We'll test a small area and tell you what result to expect before we go further.
Is an air freshener or ozone enough?
Not on its own. If the source is still in the fabric, the smell returns once the masking scent fades. Odour treatment only works properly after the stain or residue has been extracted.
