What causes it
Water spots on a car are the minerals left behind when a water droplet dries. Tap water, bore water and sprinkler water carry calcium and magnesium. When the water evaporates in the sun, those minerals stay on the paint. Left long enough, especially on hot dark paint, they can etch a ring into the clear coat.
The usual culprits around Brisbane:
- Garden sprinklers and reticulation hitting a car parked on the driveway
- Washing the car in direct sun and letting it air-dry
- Rain mixed with dust or ash, then baked dry
- Bore water on acreage properties
- Unit complex car wash bays with hard water
- Aircon drip from a balcony or building above the car park
Glass is just as prone. Hard water spots on the windscreen can make night driving and wet-weather visibility worse.
How we fix it on-site
How we remove water spots from a car depends on how deep they've gone. There are three stages. Fresh mineral deposits sit on top of the paint and come off with a mineral-removing cleaner. Older spots that have bonded need decontamination. Spots that have etched into the clear coat need machine polishing.
- Wash and inspect. We wash the car and check every panel under a light to see which type of spotting we're dealing with.
- Mineral removal. A dedicated water-spot remover dissolves surface deposits on paint, glass and trim.
- Decontamination. A clay treatment lifts bonded contamination.
- Polishing. Etched spots are machine polished out. Deep etching may need a full paint correction (cut and polish).
- Glass. Windscreens and windows are treated separately with glass-safe products.
- Protect. A sealant goes on so water beads and runs off instead of sitting and drying.
If you want longer protection afterwards, ceramic coating makes the surface harder for minerals to stick to, although no coating makes a car spot-proof. Regular exterior car detailing helps keep spots from building up again. If the interior also needs work, interior car detailing can be done in the same visit.

What it costs (from)
Water spot removal is from $XX. Price depends on vehicle size and how severe the spotting is. A sedan with fresh sprinkler spots on one side is quick. A dark 4WD with years of etching across the bonnet, roof and glass will likely need polishing and costs more.
| Severity | What's needed |
|---|---|
| Fresh surface spots | Wash, mineral remover, sealant |
| Bonded spots | Above, plus decontamination |
| Etched into clear coat | Above, plus machine polishing on affected panels |
| Spots on glass | Glass treatment, can be added to any level |

How long it takes
Light spotting usually takes two to three hours including the wash. If panels need machine polishing, expect half a day or more. We'll confirm after our inspection, because severity isn't always obvious until the car is clean.

FAQs
Can all water spots be removed?
Most can. Surface and bonded spots come off fully. Etched spots can usually be polished out, but very deep etching can go through enough of the clear coat that removing it completely would be unsafe. In that case, we'll reduce it as much as is safe and tell you why we stopped.
Will vinegar remove water spots from my car?
Diluted vinegar can soften fresh mineral spots on glass, but it won't fix etching and it can harm some trims and coatings if left on. A dedicated water-spot remover is safer. If the spots don't move after a gentle clean, they're probably bonded or etched.
How do I stop hard water spots coming back?
Move the car away from sprinklers, wash out of direct sun, and dry the car with a clean microfibre towel instead of letting it air-dry. A sealant or coating also helps water run off before it dries.
Do you remove water spots from windscreens?
Yes. Glass gets its own treatment because mineral spots on glass behave differently from those on paint. Heavy spotting on the windscreen is worth fixing, as it can affect visibility in rain and at night.
