Salt air doesn't just sit on the surface. It works into the gaps between panels, the edges of the bonnet and the wiper arms. Combined with Brisbane's humidity, it slowly corrodes chrome and bare metal and leaves a dull film over the paint. On cars parked near the waterfront, we see dulling within weeks of a wash.
Boat owners carry extra risk. Towing a trailer to the ramps at Wynnum or the Manly Boat Harbour means salt water sprayed up the back of the tow car. A hose-down at the ramp helps, but it rarely reaches everything. A proper wash afterwards gets the salt out of the wheel arches and off the tow bar area.
